Safety Footwear - An Overlooked Part of Food Safety PPE
Personal protective equipment or PPE is crucial in any workplace that focuses on food production. Employees are required to wear aprons, gloves, hair nets, and even safety goggles in some instances. However, one important piece of safety equipment that is often overlooked is safety footwear, particularly slip resistant footwear. Slip-and-fall and trip-and-fall injuries occur to roughly 12,000 workers every year, and almost all of them could've been prevented. Certain precautions such as cleaning up spills as soon as they occur and keeping walkways as clear as possible will obviously cut down on the number of such injuries in the workplace, but providing your employees with the proper safety footwear will almost certainly help.
Interestingly enough, the majority of work-related slip-and-fall injuries happen in "safe" workplaces. It's one thing to accidentally spill something that turns a floor into a slippery surface; most people will recognize that as a safety hazard and either walk around it or tread very carefully. It's another thing entirely to have to contend with a freshly mopped floor. Since no good employer can get away with not cleaning a dirty floor, a slippery wet floor cannot be avoided in many situations. The best things that can be done are to clearly label these surfaces with wet floor signs and to provide employers with slip resistant footwear.
Depending on the nature of your company and where you're located, safety footwear may or may not be required for your employees. Many companies can make do with a dress code that forbids certain kinds of footwear such as open-toed shoes or anything that doesn't provide good enough traction. On the other hand, it's always a smart idea to supply your employees with safety footwear or any other kind of PPE when you have the option to do so. Contact a supplier near you who specializes in PPE to find the proper equipment for your employees.
Even when your employees have the proper PPE and all personal and food safety precautions are taken, keep in mind that accidents can still happen. Make sure that your employees all receive the proper safety training and that proper medical attention can be provided if an injury does occur. This is all a part of providing your workers with a safe work environment, which of course is your responsibility as an employer.
